If you need to type exponents in Microsoft Office for Mac including Word for Mac and Excel for Mac, there’s an easy way to type an exponent next to a number. Go to Format > Font > Baseline > Superscript and then select the exponent you want to use. You can save this template as a new one eg: “Numbered Superscript” Highlight the number you want to add an exponent to. To use a shortcut to format an exponent, type the number or letter and select it. Those numbers must be tapped out on the numpad while holding the Alt key down. You can also use Alt+0178 for (squared) and Alt+0179 for (cubed).
If you don’t want that then delete the brackets in the “Citation” part. Use a Keyboard Shortcut to Format an Exponent. Select the number and press Ctrl+Shift+ ( Ctrl and Shift andKeep in mind this will make the numbers appear with a bracket superscripted. When the new window opens, click on Citations > Templates Output Styles > Numbered > “Edit numbered” I use a Mac (MacOS Catalina 10.15.3) Word (Microsoft Word for Mac, Version 16.35) and EndNote X9 (local library, not online).
Or, if you want to avoid making a new tamplate and just use a great style that already uses superscript numbers, select the JAMA output style in the first place. If you want numbered citations, but they are coming out as brackets, you can change that by making a new template. I know this is an old thread, but I just had this issue and have a few solutions after talking with support.
